Disabling Google TV's setup app deletes the Wi-Fi it saved

Custom-launcher guides for Google TV tell you to disable the setup app, setupwraith. On onn boxes, Android then deletes the Wi-Fi network you joined during setup, and the box drops offline until someone re-enters the password.

What happens

To make another launcher the Home screen on Google TV, you disable two packages: Google's launcher (com.google.android.apps.tv.launcherx) and the setup app (com.google.android.tungsten.setupwraith). If setupwraith stays enabled, its recovery screen takes Home back.

The Wi-Fi network you join during Google TV's first-run setup is saved by setupwraith, not by the system. The moment setupwraith is disabled, Android removes that network. The box disconnects, Wireless debugging (which needs Wi-Fi) switches off, and an ADB session over Wi-Fi drops mid-command.

Networks entered later in Settings → Network & Internet belong to the system and are not touched. Re-entering the password once fixes the box for good.

Related: while setupwraith is disabled, Settings → Privacy → Usage & diagnostics never finishes loading. Change that setting before disabling setupwraith, or re-enable it briefly to change it.

Evidence

Every box logged the removal in adb shell dumpsys wifi at the moment of the disable, attributed to setupwraith. The second line is the same network re-entered in Settings a few minutes later, now owned by the system. The network name is replaced:

dumpsys wifi
removeNetworkInternal: removed config. netId=0 configKey="<SSID>"SAE uid=10058 name=com.google.android.tungsten.setupwraith
addOrUpdateNetworkInternal: added/updated config. netId=1 configKey="<SSID>"WPA_PSK uid=1000 name=android.uid.system:1000

The same pair of lines appeared on all four boxes on October 17, 2026: two onn 4K Streaming Boxes and two onn 4K Pros.

Reproduce

  1. 01Start with a box set up the normal way, with Wi-Fi joined during Google TV setup, and connect to it with ADB.
  2. 02Check who saved the network: adb shell dumpsys wifi | grep cname=com.google.android.tungsten.setupwraith prints the network's entry if setupwraith owns it.
  3. 03Disable the setup app: adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.tungsten.setupwraith. The box drops off Wi-Fi.
  4. 04Re-enter the password in Settings, reconnect, and run adb shell dumpsys wifi | grep removeNetworkInternal to see the removal attributed to setupwraith.

04

Fix and cautions

Run the ownership check above before disabling setupwraith. If setupwraith owns the network, have someone at the TV when you disable it, and re-enter the Wi-Fi password in Settings → Network & Internet straight afterwards. The re-entered network belongs to the system and stays put.

Re-enabling setupwraith (pm enable --user 0 com.google.android.tungsten.setupwraith) restores the setup app, not the deleted network.

Not tested

  • Tested on four onn boxes across two models. Other Google TV devices (Chromecast with Google TV, TCL, Hisense) ship the same setup package and are probably affected, but I haven't tested them.
  • I re-entered the password after disabling setupwraith. Forgetting and rejoining the network before disabling it should avoid the drop, because the system would then own it, but I haven't tested that order.
  • This is observed behavior. I haven't traced the Android code path that removes the network.
